Pregnancy is a profound rite of passage in a woman’s life, and it is a privilege to support women’s yoga practice during this special time of their lives. Mothers experience unique physical and emotional transformations during pregnancy, birth and post-birth, and therefore require specialised yoga instruction. This 85-hour Yoga Alliance recognised program offers participants fundamental skills to teach safe and effective prenatal, postnatal, and parent & baby yoga classes. It also covers the instruction of active birth workshops. Graduates of this teacher training course will be adequately equipped with yoga teaching techniques to help women improve their pregnancy experience, prepare for birth and recover post-birth. Our mission is to educate and empower women to “Birth Bright” — to give birth in awareness.

Course participants will learn:

  • Guiding principles, objectives and benefits of pregnancy yoga
  • The roles and responsibilities of a yoga teacher in pregnancy yoga
  • The history and cultural context of birth
  • Understanding the yoga teacher’s relationship with health care professionals
  • Anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, labour and birth
  • Different stages of pregnancy and labour
  • Appropriate asanas for different stages of pregnancy
  • Contraindications, common discomforts and conditions during pregnancy; how to adapt yoga practice to these
  • Psychological considerations during pregnancy; how to use pranayama, meditation, chanting and deep relaxation techniques to help with the emotional and mental aspects of pregnancy and birth
  • The theory of Optimal Foetal Positioning (OFP); how yoga poses and movements can promote OFP and assist in labour
  • How yoga techniques such as breath and visualisation can help during labour
  • Postpartum physiological and emotional changes in the mother; how to teach postnatal classes to support mothers
  • Specific asanas and exercises for reconditioning the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles after birth
  • Baby developments in the early postnatal period; how to teach parent & baby classes
  • Sequencing and planning for prenatal, postnatal, parent & baby yoga classes
  • Design of one-on-one pregnancy yoga classes
  • Integration of pregnant and postnatal mothers into general yoga classes
  • How to conduct active birth workshops to prepare couples for labour
  • The birth partner’s role and participation in labour
  • Yoga philosophy (yamas and niyamas) applied to teaching pregnancy yoga

This teacher training is suitable for yoga teachers, aspiring yoga teachers, pregnant women, midwives, doulas and anyone interested in yoga during and after pregnancy. It will provide participants with a 85-hour specialisation in pregnancy yoga, however in order to teach pregnancy yoga after the course it is expected that the trainee is already a registered yoga teacher. The training will be taught in English mainly, while Sanskrit terminology will also be used to honour the traditions of yoga. Participants who have successfully completed this course may apply for Registered Pre-natal Yoga Teacher (RPYT) with Yoga Alliance after fulfilling 30 hours of pregnancy teaching and completing all required assignments.

About Holly

Holly’s yoga journey started in 2003 when she discovered yoga as an effective stress relief tool while studying in Canada. She fell in love with the practice where she could stop worrying about school and find peace in herself. Upon returning to Hong Kong in 2007, Holly started working for an investment bank and found herself having to cope with a highly stressful and demanding work environment. Holly re-connected with yoga amidst her hectic life and found sanctuary on the yoga mat.

As Holly progressed in her career, she realised that she could not find fulfilment and contentment at work. Over time, yoga taught her to listen to her innermost being. In 2014, she decided to leave the security of a corporate job behind and embark on a self-discovery journey. It started with a transformational teacher training with Patrick Creelman in the summer of 2014, after which Holly registered with the Yoga Alliance as a 200-hour Yoga Teacher and started teaching group, community, private and corporate classes. In 2015, Holly studied pre-natal yoga, post-natal yoga and active birth with Michelle Papa and Dr. Jean Byrne, further recognising the physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga. Holly believes in the therapeutic power of yoga, as she has healed her own injuries and regained strength with her yoga practice.
